This book, Why Nations Fail: The Origins of Power, Prosperity, and Poverty by Damon Acemoglu and James A. Robinson, discusses though the lenses of economics, history, and political science why some countries are successful and others, not so much. This book is well written, and has very good and in depth research.
It has a feel of Guns Germs and Steel but not as a historical analysis but a modern sociological one. Not everyone will agree with this book; but people who wish to engage in discussions on how to reshape society should be familiar with the theories presented, even if they do not agree.
