This Pulitzer-award-winning novel is a historical alternate history fiction about what would happen is slavery never abolished. Taking the perspective of two slaves that tries to escape to the north, we are treated to the writing that espouses some genius structural choices and many, many great ideas. I am personally burnt out on slavery narratives so I cannot say this was a pleasure to read. So much unrelenting horror is all I could say.
I just wasn't sure what Whitehead could possibly do that would be new. I mean it’s beaten to death so much that there is literallty a mockumentary about it (C.S.A.: The Confederate States of America). But yet I was shocked when the title isn’t merely a simile, but a direct allusion; Yes, the railroad is a real physical thing. Buy this book if you’re intrigued.
